Hobo Life

Day 29 - Warumba to Farina

Friday, 22 November 2013

Up early to drive the station. We have done one of these Flinders station drives a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. It is an insight into the history of the land. The tough life the woodcutters lived. Lots of stumps both by axe and cross saw. Up on the hills you look down on the green ribbon of Willow Creek which meanders through this property. Unfortunately a bit of an overcast day so the views over to wIlpena Pound not the best. At least we have seen it before. We must have crossed Willow Creek a dozen times, each one felt a bit steeper (to me) I am sure HH would disagree.

Back to the HS to return the keys and over an hour later we managed to get back on the road again. We so enjoyed talking to the caretaker friend. He had been a train driver on the trans Australian. Having recently just driven alongside much of it, we were interested in learning more about the history and stories of that time,

We had received a text confirming Lange and Inara were on their way so we got underway. A brief stop in Hawker to air up and lunch then north to farina.

The Flinders ranges majestic on our right as we passed Parachulna. Just north of Leigh Creek HH started mumbling about checking out the pub in Lyndhurst. We figured we were about half an hour ahead of our buddies so we swung a right onto the strezlecki track and pulled up outside the pub. Not listed in that bush Pub book, but it had cold beer, a friendly German backpacker behind the bar and a local lady from a nearby station who filled us in on some Afghan history.

We got to Farina 10 minutes before Lange and Inara. Lots of information here about the town that was and plenty of ruins and relics. A little camp area made for a pleasant evening, despite the parrots and their raucous squacks.
