Day 70 - Meetus falls to lake Toom
Monday, 7 April 2014
Set off, and fortunately we had only gone 6.1KM before I realised I was missing the Camp 6 book from my door pocket. Not guilty, HH had been pouring over it on the BBQ table before we left:). Little did we know the day would pan out with quite a bit of back tracking. Decided to look at the lost falls, but we only found where they should have been! no water. Then on to lake Leake. A bit of a hotel/pub just before and after checking out the fishing shack lake edge we went back to the pub for a bite to eat. Not much of a place, bit bogan, in fact the most bogan place I think we have seen in Tassie. Got some advice from the local sitting at the bar about Lake Toom so off we went.
That is where the back tracking started, first when we came up to a barrier saying No Entry, private resort, next another private property barrier. They could have told you 10km back!!! The only other track said No Through Road, bridge down. Well as HH is want, he had to see for himself. Yup bridge down, but looked like a well used ford to the side. Whilst he walked off to check it out, a vehicle drove up, turns out they were from the private resort. Got the surprise of my life when I found out they were checking out who we were, as they had suspected we might be poachers. Oh, I said, is it good fishing here, not fish was their reply Deer! We had a good laugh, one look at us was enough to see were obviously were just tourists.
But we got over the ford and eventually to Lake Toom, actually a dam, bit ordinary but lots of birds, the swift parrot, yellow throated honeyeater and robin all endemic to Tasmania.
