Nelson Bay to Smithton

Day 15 - Nelson Bay to Smithton

Tuesday, 11 February 2014

Could have stayed here all day, but HH wanted to keep moving! Must say the flies were bitey. Posed out on The Edge of then world Lookout at the mouth of Arthur River. So much drift wood, literally trees, must be something you can do with it.

Arthur River was just a drive through place. Hoping the little shop might have apples, but no luck. Maybe Marrewa? Yup, the little General Store/Post office had 4 apples left and we had a bite to eat at the tavern. Some very interesting photos on the walls. This is very much a commercial fishing coast, lots of lobster/crayfish. Lots of little sheltered bays, however, navigating into them past rocks looks treacherous, just looking at the photos got my adrenaline going. Yes I know it doesn't take much to get my adrenaline going:)

Tried to get to the north west corner of Tassie but it is private land. A large wind farm, but you have to book a tour to have a look.

Made our way to Smithton, a free camp on the esplanade. Tide right out, very muddy and the boats very high and dry. Only one other camper, a huge Winnebago. Seems it is a popular fishing spot for the locals. Learnt that snotty nosed Trevally go for chicken, only the breast meat mind:). I had just our chicken for dinner in the pot, so we quickly hoicked out a piece for bait, unfortunately it was thigh, so it was Chicken Tonight, not Chicken Tonight tomorrow.
