Snowy River to Murray River

Day 2 - Snowy River to Murray River

Wednesday, 29 January 2014

Up early, still hot. Drive to Thredbo to walk up Mt Kosiuzko. Amazing scenery. Drove through Suggan Buggan. Always wanted to go there just because of the sound of the name (Menindee was another one) not much there, but the original old school house.

Pushing on through Jindabyne, packed a quick picnic and took the chairlift at the base of Mt Kosiuzko. Ugh, my stomach not happy, how did Ido these things in Canada.

The wind kept the temperature down, but gave you ear ache:). It is a 13km round trip to the peak, and although the walk is only a rise of 300m, it is almost constant over the 6.5 km. apart from the last 800m, which is gravel, the rest is metal grate board walk. A lovely clear blue sky. Keep thinking are we nearly there yet, but up over the next rise you can see then path continuing up the next incline. Finally made it to the top and did all the photo stuff. About 1km into the downhill my knee decided it had had enough. The rest of the walk was a hobble. Then the worst bit when we got back on the chairlift, thought I was going to throw up. Face stuffed into scarf, deep breaths, listening to HH telling me how far to go. Got off feeling traumatised. Managed to get back to the car in a stunned daze.

Horribly hot at the bottom, so HH just drove on for a few more hours. Fortunately it was still spectacular scenery, plenty to take my mind off the experience of the chair lift.

Found a campsite along the banks of the Murray River. Still pleasantly warm so it was wonderful to have a dip and freshen up after the trip to Australia's highest peak.
