Day 10 - Rowallan Bridge to Lorinna
Thursday, 6 February 2014
Lots of diggings and scratchings during the night, think something was very interested in my little green stool, but no teeth marks :)
Still struggling to catch up with my blog. Last night had set aside time but a young couple parked up near us and as always there are so many stories to share. They were from Brisbane and were going to climb and overnight on the Walls of Jerusalem, they had also done the biggest canyon trip at cradle Mountain. When I heard how cold the water is, and as fit healthy youngsters they had felt it, I do t think i have a chance.
HH told me yesterday that he had no problems packing the camper away on his own, so I said he could do it again today, whilst I blogged. He managed very well, then got in the car and asked me where the keys were:). Probably where they live when we are camped (on the shelf in the camper) how can that be my fault?
Bit of a boring drive out to Devils Gullet. I get a bit fed up with forests (no views) and usually winding roads. The gullet was quite good! glad there is a very sturdy balustrade lookout. Unfortunately light not good. A quick look at lake mcKenzie, all part of the dams/hydro system. Looked a bit barren. Then far too long driving through logged forests, not impressed. This drive is in the 4x4 Tassie Tracks book! However, after lunch the track took us along side, (very steep) the river that comes into Lake Cethana at Lorinna. The forest was different, beautiful trees.
Had heard from Michael this was a bit of a Nimbim type of place, so not sure what to expect. Were absolutely delighted with the place. Obviously an off grid settlement, very small and idyllic. In its own little valley, curious houses dotted around. Obviously very alternative, but it looked very functional. Spoke to a family up the side of one of the winding tracks who were collecting wood, for fire or house extension? They were very friendly. Recommended the lake side for camping.
After thoroughly exploring we set up beside a wooden shelter (thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow). Hadn't been there long and a small motorbike ambled down. Got chatting to Stephen. A local man, moved here in 2005. We were eager to quiz him on the place. Not many children left here and mostly an ageing population, I guess most people moved out here in the 60's and 70's. Those looking to live off the land in a bit of pristine peace and quiet.
A mum came down with her 3 girls for a swim. In a small community every one knows everyone. We spent a couple of hours chatting and swimming. I am in heaven.
Stephen has invited us up to his place tomorrow. He collects King Billy pine (washes down River from Cradle mt). Only a few places it grows, used to be prized for ship building. He likes his woodwork. I am really looking forward to being inside an off the grid house.
