Day 16 - Smithton to Stanley
Wednesday, 12 February 2014
Checked out Seven Mile Beach. HH drove both directions looking for a suitable fishing spot. Ma local had told us it was a good place, but nothing convinced my fisherman. There was the old remains of a whale, shut windows and turned off fan as we drove passed.
Stanley and the Nut has the most amazing coastline. Unfortunately quite an overcast day, but not cold or rainy. The Nut has a chair lift, but after my last experience up Mt kosiuzsco I decided I would have to walk the steep 430m to the top. Steep it was, but glad I did it.
Back in town HH succumbed to a scallop pie, a sit down job, very up market, however, when I asked HH how it rated the only comment was 'OK but maybe the curry scallop would have had more flavour".
A lovely little town to walk around, very historic, but also very touristy, so expensive. Was interested to learn it was the birthplace of Joseph Lyons, his cottage still standing. He was Australia's first Tasmanian prime minister. Must research more about his wife, Enid, 12 children, and Australia's first woman in the House of Representatives.
Spent the night at the free camp at fisherman's wharf. Not chatting to the local running fishing charters and restoring wooden boats. Very interesting character. Had a small memorabilia display, lots of Huon pine, just have to touch it.
Later 5 huge cattle trucks came in to collect cattle, shipped in from King Island. Another fellow camper parked up near us had owned a cattle farm in Victoria, so she was filling me in on the life of a cow! quite well travelled it would seem. Calves bought in Victoria, shipped off to King island to feast up on their grass. When 500-550kg shipped over to Stanley and trucked off to the abattoir, who knows where to after that, the local market, or where?
