Macquarie Heads - Hamilton

Day 59 - Macquarie Heads - Hamilton

Thursday, 27 March 2014

Not sunny today, oh well, I did make the most of while it lasted. Had to have another chat to Alex, wanted to know exactly where he was headed off to today. So obliging, got the map out and had all the time in the world to share. Just a short kayak today across to the other side, then a 4 day walk down the coast.

Later I saw him pulling the kayak down to the beach, I tried to help drag a bit, but doubt it was that much of a help. We took a few photos and waved our farewells.

HH 'adventure' of driving around the heads on to ocean beach were fairly short lived after a few kilometres when we discovered the tide was still too high. Phew! We didn't have to back track far to a turn off that brought us back to Strahan.

Aired up the tires and we are back to Hobart, via Queenstown for a pie of course.

Macquarie Heads

Day 58 - Macquarie Heads

Wednesday, 26 March 2014

No moving on today, yippee, chance to laze around, catch up, soak up some sunshine. First job, stroll down the beach with coffee to see The Eagle sail past. Wonder if the skipper recognised us ?:). This is a very popular fishing spot, so despite HH minding his crook back, bet he can't resist casting a lure or two.

Found a few wet things in cupboards from all the rain, so we laid it all out in the sun. Warm enough to get the bikini on. Had a bit of a spring clean seeing as the cupboards were empty. HH took a wheel off to discover one of the brake pads has worn down to metal, all these hills have taken a toll.

Enjoyed pottering between the campsite and checking out what was happening on the beach. Went down to watch the evening turn pink and started chatting to a young man, Alex. What an adventure his life has been. Has spent the last 15 years visiting Tassie on his quest to paddle his kayak around the island. Lots of long walking treks as well. Oh I feel so tame and boring when I listen to amazing people like this. One story about his not being able to get into shore as the swell/surf too big and spent the whole night paddling to keep off the rocks, filled me with horrors. When I mentioned that I didn't think I would ever recover from an event like that he laughed and said it was 6 months before he could go to the beach in the evening, honest, well! he is a psychotherapist :)

Strauhan - Macquarie Heads

Day 57 - Strauhan - Macquarie Heads

Tuesday, 25 March 2014

A beautiful day, thank goodness, perfect for the cruise. We boarded up, found our seats, didn't have to wait long to be underway. It is quite a scenic waterway/countryside. Whilst I am not a cruise person, at least to see this in such beautiful light is great.

Whilst the skipper filled us in on all the what's what etc we were free to move about. Soon found ourselves up on the bridge, best view - up the top and up front. Hell's Gates aptly named, but today is an exceptionally calm day so we could go right out, doesn't happen too often. I have to admit I did enjoy this part. Incredible harbour and coast. Back into the sanctuary of the harbour (I think twice the size of Sydney harbour) we were educated about Tasmania's salmon farms. Despite what he said, I still have my doubts about the sustainability of it all. But it is much needed jobs. On to Sarah Island, predates port Arthur convict settlement. A great tour given by The Round Earth Comoany. Very entertaining and informative. All the bett because it was such a great day. Back on board for lunch. Salads, cold meats, salmon and cheese before a walk about at board walked bit of rainforest. Bit of a diddly squat rainforest, but i guess we have been spoilt with what we have seen.

Six hours later we disembarked and after a quick drive around the harbour headed out to Macquarie Heads to camp. Six dollars a night, in a lovely grassed clearing, a stones throw from the beach, and blue skies, my boxes are ticked :)

Queenstown - Strauhan

Day 56 - Queenstown - Strauhan

Monday, 24 March 2014

Up early, HH going own his treat today. Has wanted to do this since we last came through Queenstown. A trip on the old historic Wilderness Railway. Off he went whilst I packed up and headed up the road to the laundrette. Time to check out the op shop as well and a browse around the Wilderness Railway book shop. Oh so many history books I would love to get my nose into. Well I did for half an hour or so :)

HH returned on a high, best tour he has had in a long time. There was a fantastic guard (guide) in the carriage who entertained everyone will lots of history and funny stories. A spot of gold panning and a great explanation of the ABT system. A sort of double cog thing that the train latches on to 'winch' itself up the steep mountain side. I bet an engineer would be horrified at my explanation :)

On to Strahan. Not far but very windy. A clear day, coming into town, the view over the harbour rather lovely. A stroll up and down the foreshore and I succumbed to do a cruise. Why oh why do I give in :)

Had a look around the Huon pine shop, oh I want! It smells beautiful. In the mill next door I wanted to buy up big time. They had a big crate of $1 off cuts, if only we had more space and weight allowance.

Decided to book into a CP as it was an early start for the cruise and as our batteries are on their last legs they don't hold a charge very well, so a boost of a power socket will help.

Lake Burbury - Queenstown

Day 55 - Lake Burbury - Queenstown

Sunday, 23 March 2014

Into Queenstown, to see if there is a room for the night at The Empire Hotel. Noticed the old building when we passed through before. Old but not fancy is the theme, apart from the old staircase, which is one of those Trust Heritage listed things. The Blackwood being sent to England to be made into the stair case! then returned. I counted 23 carved Newell posts!

Having secured a room, we set off to find the track to Pillinger. Our friends Inara and Lange had said it was wonderful. Follows and old railway line beside the Bird River that runs into the top end of Macquarie Harbour. Pillinger was started (by a rival, Mr Crotty) to ship Queenstown's copper out of Macquarie Harbour. Mr Kelly built the, now Wilderness Railway to Strahan. The once thriving township of Pillinger only functioned for a few years and went into disrepair when me Crotty took a trip back to the UK and died. Mr Kelly bought the company out and Strahan became the main port.

We packed up some food, and set of for the 5km trip to Pillinger. Met up with another couple, locals, who not only new so much interesting stuff, Gerald was among other things a train buff (who had his ticket to drive them as well). He had also done a stint in Antarctica. Well HH was absolutely delighted with his company.

The walk was through rain forest, with glimpses of the river. It passed quickly having great conversation with someone so I interesting. Also his wife was not a fast walker so I could keep up. We got to the old site of the township and managed to have lunch before the weather deteriorated. We could see the rail coming in from the jetty. The old brick kilns here (3 sets of ruins) were huge. I forget the exact number but well over 300,000 could be fired at a time!

I wasn't keen to hang around in the wet, so we said our goodbyes and headed back. By the time we got back to the car I had walked over 20,000 steps on my pedometer (huh, what a waste, I only need to do 10,000 a day) but from thigh down I was drenched. Miserable, hate it. But for the thought of a hot shower and drying out at The Empire I would have been even grumpier :)

We checked in, hot showered and draped all our wet stuff around the room under the heaters. A nice dinner in the lovely high ceiling old dining room before retiring to watch the latest episode of Blacklist, woo hoo.
