Esperance River, Cockle Creek

Day 49 - Esperance River, Cockle Creek

Monday, 17 March 2014

Nice and wet this morning, :). More 4x4 tracks but we made it to the Thermal springs. Only 28 deg, but the sun came out, wind not too bad and the most beautiful setting. For $5 ($4 seniors!) how can you beat that. A swim in a thermal pool, half a dozen lengths and our arms were aching, ha ha, followed by a hot shower, what a treat. Had spotted a couple of souvenirs in the cafe, and when I got back HH was feeling up to a Magnum treat.

Down to Cockle creek. The most south you can drive in Tasmania, any further has to be by foot (or boat). Have read a little about about a handful of locals that have lived out their lives in this isolated neck of the woods (and coast). A natural bay, accidentally discovered by D'entrecastaux in the 1770's. Later discovered to be anatural haunt for whales to calf, so guess what? Say no more. What with the whalers and foresters, has made for some interesting stories, but now preserved as part of the World Wilderness Heritage scheme.

Camped up in the midst of 3 European adventurers! only one whizz bang, but no sounds from them. Nice to see serious walkers appreciating this breathtaking place.

At dusk, we were so excited to see a quoll. Our first, live and not captive variety. Amused to see it being chased by a pademelon.
