Whitehouse Beach, St Colombia Falls

Day 30 - Whitehouse Beach, St Colombia Falls

Wednesday, 26 February 2014

A small bit of rain accompanied by a couple of loud thunder rumblings.

A slow pack up then explored the rest of this bit of coast before taking one of the tracks in that 4x4 book. Wasn't much of a track, wouldn't think twice of doing it in an ordinary car!!

On to Derby. What a beautiful historic town. Tin discovery put this place on the map big time in the late 1880's. Very interesting museum, managed by yet another friendly, helpful and informative Tasmanian.

I found a wonderful chopping board. Decided to treat myself to a wooden one and wanted something unique from this island. Was hoping I might find an old one in a second hand shop, but went into the little craft shop in town. Yet another friendly, local happy to chat away. She had the perfect board for me. Made by a local man. Just a slice of Huon Pine, but cross cut. Perfect. I was thinking it must have been a very small tree, but reading up on the Huon, they take 500 years to mature, growing only 120mm in diameter a century. So not a plantation crop. Not many left now, due to the heavy logging industry last century.

Walked the Ralph Falls, then on to St Colombia Falls.

Set up camp at a little clearing by the River in the Dogwood Forest. Have exchanged the lapping of the ocean for the rushing waters, tumbling over the granite boulders. Just asked HH how he would describe the sound of the water - his reply "pretty noisy". Ha ha. I think it wonderful. Helps block out the tinea. Think it will be a cold night.
