Evercreech to Apsley Waterhole

Day 37 - Evercreech to Apsley Waterhole

Wednesday, 5 March 2014

Waking up to wet canvas and deep in shade we obviously had to go for a walk. First the round trip past the 4 white knights. Fairyland underneath the manferns. Quite magical, sun shining through the ferns lit the place up, almost glowing. Maybe the rain last night has brightened things as well. Then we did the waterfall walk. Not much water but still a good walk, although the bridge at the end had been washed away so it was a slippery stepping stone crossing, thank goodness I brought my stick.

Back to camp, lost the track somewhere, but we got back without getting wet feet. Tried to have a quick goodbye with the friends last night, but so much to chat about. HH almost had to drag me away:) so nice to have someone to talk to.

Apsley falls was next on the agenda. The forest tracks brought us out at Fingal. A great spot for our lunch, turns out it is one of those perfect Tassie overnighters. BBQ, tables, toilets and not only $2 showers but power as well! This little country is pulling out all stops to bring the tourists. The road to Apsley Falls from this end seems to be closed so we will have to come in from the coast side. Going through St Mary's I noticed a sign that said something like campers! mozzies, natures way.... Couldn't quite catch it. HH managed to stop before the next village and we meandered backl. Turned out to be a home made chocolate shop, guess who had to go in? Bit of a gift shop as well. Lovely lady, again half the day goes by chatting. Had a basket of apples from a neighbours tree. I have seen apples here (in Tassie) that I have never heard of. I suspect the mainland just gets bought into then gala, pink lady lines etc? but at 60c an apple, picked that morning, HH can have his chocolate and I was in heaven with my apple. St Mary's also has a free camp spot with the $2 shower deal. I am liking this place more and more.

We drive down to the coast heading towards Bicheno via Mt Elephant pass, quite a road.

Found Apsley falls, one other vehicle parked up, so we walked off to check out the waterhole. Falls too long a walk at this time of day. We planned on camping the night, no signs to say you can't. Anyway, here we are and now another 5 vehicles camping overnight as well, two are of the whizz bang variety, we shall see .....
