Day 36 - Cosy Corner to Evercreech Forest
Tuesday, 4 March 2014
Into St Helen's. Heard there are hot showers to be had for $2 on the wharf. Fourth one in a month, we decided to celebrate and share. Next treat, fresh groceries and wine. Over a Lamb Red Thai curry pie (and a pastime for me) in the local bakery HH declared the place had the feel of an English seaside town - 50 years ago I added.
Next came the inevitable off road stuff. Up the mountainside behind Scamanda for the sky view track. Well, it was marked as medium, but the previous 'medium' tracks you could do in a car, not this one, this was steep, and the loose rocks flipped me out. I was out of the car in a shot and walked. Didn't help that I could hear HH having trouble engaging 4L. I think I am allergic to adrenalin, have such a whipped out feeling afterwards, just want to go to sleep.
We turned up a track and thought we were following in the footsteps of Michael (had his way points up) and came up against an obstacle, or so I thought. HH was out, inspecting, next thing I know the axe is out "you have just had a shower" I cry out. He just whips his shirt off and attacks this poor tree that just happens to be in his way. Did think it must have been a recent fall as Michael had come this way. Eventually the tree was cut in half, but it was still too heavy to swing around, so the winch came out. About time we made sure it was still in good working order. In no time the track was clear and we were off again. Less than 1km up the mountainside I noticed we were no longer following in Michael's footsteps, ha ha what a laugh, back we drove, past the now cleared fallen tree. HH commented to me that I was going to enjoy writing up this little escapade:). :) :)
We spent the rest of the afternoon meandering up and down these forested mountainsides. Some plantations, and some places stripped bare, they look like war zones to me.
Got to Evercreech Forest, worth coming to. The 4 White Knights are only a 5 minute walk in. White gums, that got saved from the loggers as someone recognised they looked rather large (for a white gum). Now claimed to be the tallest in the world at over 91 metres.
Hmmm, now what? [Map] | No problem with my axe [Map]
Keep going, [Map] | Plan 2, out comes the winch. [Map]
All clear! [Map] | Forestry for you [Map]
One of the 4 white knights! [Map] | 7 hugs needed to encompass it :) [Map] |
