Day 51 - Port Huon, Mt Field

Heading north passing through Franklin, saw a sign "Best scallop pies in Tasmania". Couldn't believe HH drove straight past! When I pointed it out, he did a quick U'y :). They were still in the oven and whilst we waited (in the trendiest gallery/cafe) I checked up old emails and found the one from Piers to check when he was visiting Hobart. Found it and on rereading saw he had suggested looking up friends of his, Shane and Jane, if we passed through Franklin. Their antiques business was just down the road, so whilst waiting for the too hot to eat pie to cool down we popped in to say hello. What a small world. Hopefully we might all meet up again when Piers is in Hobart next week.
Up to Huonville for a quick restock and refuel whilst I rushed into the op shop looking for buttons as I have lost one off my 'new' waist coat. Jackpot, a packet of mother of Pearl, just the right size for $1. How easy am I to please! just love finds like that. After HH had eaten his scallop pie, agreeing the sign had not lied, lunch wasn't going to happen so I snacked on apples from a roadside stall. Just love these arkane apples.
Shane had told us about a short cut track to the Strathgordon Rd,a logging road, which cut out Hobqrt. Not on any maps, HH was delighted. Did meet 3 big logging trucks coming towards us but there was a bend in the road and a bridge so we were all slowing down. Came to a locked gate just before joining up with the main road, !!! Grrrr. Remember this happening to us in WA whilst recce ing for a club trip :). However, this time we didn't have to backtrack too far to find another route through. Still saved us a lot of time and the hassle of Hobart.
The man we met on the Duck Lake track recommended the walks and falls at Mt Field so we camped there the night. Only $20 for a powered site, showers, washing machines and a lovely BBQ hut with sink and hot water. Camped not 20 metres from the burbling Tyenna River! Although we were aware that the logging trucks run all night. Maybe that was the noise we heard at Port Huon?
Had time to do the Russell and Horseshoe Falls, and the Tall Trees, swamp gums. Also drove a bit further on to lake Dobson. We were absolutely stunned to see the sub alpine Pandanus . Although we had seen them at Cradle Mt, this was quite a different setting, walking underneath them in a grove was magical.
