Cockle Creek - Port Huon

Day 50 - Cockle Creek - Port Huon

Tuesday, 18 March 2014

After a quick drive/walk down to the whale sculpture (life size of a 3 month old), I convinced HH that a 2 hour walk to the other coast not sensible with his back not getting any better. So we stood around instead :) chatting to interesting people. One from Bridgetown, originally, the other whose brother and father had set up the Ida bay Railway, years ago, very historic now.

We meandered up the coastline, although not the sunniest day, views were beautiful. Turning in at Southport I saw a sign that said the most Southey pub in Australia - of course that meant lunch. A new building, but lots of historic photos up. Southport itself, very pretty, lovely bit of coast. That was the word of the day, just lovely, and HH telling me "I like it here". Dover was the same, well not the same, but just as Lovely.

Were surprised when we saw Huon Salmon farm! open to the public. In we trotted to watch a short DVD about the company and their 'product'. The lady was very evasive when asked about algal blooms up in the river and what they fed the fish. Protein pellets! Hmm I want to know more.

Eventually got to Geeveston. Want to check out some wood places here, arty crafty sort of place. Just want to hang around a bit more. Fell in love with the place. Some lovely wood /craft places. The sushi man (from Hobart markets) is based here, but only open Friday and Saturdays :(

Kicking myself for not buying the King Billy bowl that I saw from the chocolate/fudge shop in St. Mary's, haven't seen a single bit of King Billy pine since.

Camped at Port Huon. A camp book site, run by the community. $10 a night, clean toilets, great BBQ hut where we met a Canadian couple from Kelowna in BC, who travel the warmer parts of the world during the Canadian winters.

A noisy night, probably Huon Salmon trucks going up north to the processing plant.
