Day 56 - Queenstown - Strauhan
Monday, 24 March 2014
Up early, HH going own his treat today. Has wanted to do this since we last came through Queenstown. A trip on the old historic Wilderness Railway. Off he went whilst I packed up and headed up the road to the laundrette. Time to check out the op shop as well and a browse around the Wilderness Railway book shop. Oh so many history books I would love to get my nose into. Well I did for half an hour or so :)
HH returned on a high, best tour he has had in a long time. There was a fantastic guard (guide) in the carriage who entertained everyone will lots of history and funny stories. A spot of gold panning and a great explanation of the ABT system. A sort of double cog thing that the train latches on to 'winch' itself up the steep mountain side. I bet an engineer would be horrified at my explanation :)
On to Strahan. Not far but very windy. A clear day, coming into town, the view over the harbour rather lovely. A stroll up and down the foreshore and I succumbed to do a cruise. Why oh why do I give in :)
Had a look around the Huon pine shop, oh I want! It smells beautiful. In the mill next door I wanted to buy up big time. They had a big crate of $1 off cuts, if only we had more space and weight allowance.
Decided to book into a CP as it was an early start for the cruise and as our batteries are on their last legs they don't hold a charge very well, so a boost of a power socket will help.
