Day 54 - Hamilton - Burbury Lake
Saturday, 22 March 2014
A very wet night, so decided to have a cooked breakfast treat, making use of the BBQ facilities, followed by a hot shower whilst waiting for the canvas to dry out a bit. Also enjoyed Bruce and Shelly's company and addresses etc.
A good break in the weather on the west coast so off we go. Climbing, winding, climbing winding. Spectacular. Checking out Tarraleah we were surprised to see so many buildings. Once home to many power station workers, now mainly just tourists. Tried to buy a pie for lunch, but the notice on the door said closed because of a power cut. Ha ha, at the power station.
Down the other side to where we found a lovely picnic shelter so we stopped to make our own lunch, and got chatting to 3 cyclists whom we had passed coming down the hill. They were out from Hobart for the weekend. One of them had lived in Tarraleah as a kid. A few info plaques, just looking at the living conditions then, let alone the working conditions, oh my, horrendous.
Very impressed with the forward thinking of the engineers designing and building Tasmania's hydro system. Really harnessing a natural power, lots of water, and lots of mountains.
Camped up at Lake Burbury, just East of Queenstown. Quite pleasant, $5 a night and not many people so we were able to park right next to the BBQ hut, out of any weather.
